High Reliability Communication System for Karnaphuli Tunnel


Elevating Connectivity: How OM8000 Transforming Bangladesh Tunnel for Reliable Communication


Project Background

The 9.3km-long Kanapuri River Tunnel in Bangladesh, including a shield tunnel section of 2,450m in length and 11.8m in diameter, was designed and constructed using Chinese specifications, with a design speed of 80km/h for a two-hole, four-lane tunnel, and a total project contract value of US$700 million.


On 26 November 2022, a ceremony was held to mark the completion of the southern tunnel of the Kanapuri River project in Monga, which was financed by the Export-Import Bank of China, contracted by China Communications Construction Company Limited and implemented by China Road and Bridge Engineering Company Limited.


The Kanapuri River Tunnel is the first tunnel in Bangladesh, which will greatly improve the traffic conditions in Chittagong and drive the economic development of Bangladesh, and will also help to improve the Asian Highway Network and promote the connectivity between Bangladesh and neighboring countries.It is important for the implementation of the "One Belt, One Road" initiative and the construction of the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor.


Project Requirement

Based on the daily communication needs and actual situation in the tunnel, combined with the current technological development and system management requirements, New Rock provided the client with a unified communication management, which designed to efficiently integrate the functions of tunnel emergency phone, emergency broadcasting, office communication, multi-level unified management with high reliability.

The system requires common dispatching functions such as intercom, shouting, forcible demolition, forced insertion and listening. Multi-terminals are connected to the gateway equipment to enable the intercom broadcast system and external phones to communicate.

New Rock Solution
1.Install the New Rock OM8000 unified communication IP PBX in the tunnel monitoring center server room, which can support up to 8000 extensions and 800 concurrent calls.
2. Access to the local PSTN through the digital trunk gateway OM1000-TE.

3.Installation of multiple IP telephones in the tunnel control and management station, all of which transmit and communicate data through the network and are registered to the New Rock OM8000 IP PBX unified communications platform.

1.With the VoIP technology to abandon the traditional PABX and analog phones which require the laying of a large number of analog telephone lines with high labor cost and time consumption and reduce the risk system troubleshooting, increasing the speed of deployment of communication systems in tunnels and greatly reducing the cost of wiring in tunnels. The new VoIP system has high transmission speed and high stability, and also facilitates future system expansion and increment.
2. Set up an answering group for the duty officer, and when the duty officer is not in his seat, it supports the transfer of incoming calls to his mobile phone extension to ensure that emergent calls are not missed.
3. Support max 600 channel call recording and multi-level inquiry and management.
4. Open API interface, providing users with cost-effective access to later services.
5. Support unified management of equipment and remote access, reducing long-term system operation and maintenance costs.
6. High reliability guarantee, the OM8000 IP PBX deployed in the tunnel supports dual power supply and dual network port redundancy, and the OM1000-TE digital trunk gateway supports dual power supply and dual network port redundancy to avoid communication interruption caused by single point failure of network and power supply. The communication system adopts multiple disaster recovery methods to ensure high availability of communication in the tunnel.

7. The New Rock OM8000 IP PBX has fault alarm and display function, which greatly simplifies the workload of operation and management personnel, fully protects the lives and properties of the tunnel, and improve the efficiency of the daily system management.
