What is a VoIP Phone and how it works?

What is VOIP phone?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) in short is the digitization of analog signals (Voice) in the form of data packets for real-time delivery over IP networks. VoIP can deliver voice, fax, video, and data services inexpensively over IP networks, such as unified messaging services, virtual telephony, virtual voice/fax mailboxes, number search services, Internet call centers, Internet call management, telephone video conferencing, e-commerce, fax store-and-forward, and various information store-and-forward, etc.

How to use IP Phone?

 (i) ATA: The simplest and most commonly used method, using ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) devices. ATA allows you to connect a standard telephone to a computer or the Internet for VoIP. ATA is an analog-to-digital converter. It takes the analog signal from a conventional phone and converts it to digital data for transmission over the Internet. You simply take the ATA out of the box, connect the phone line that was connected to the wall outlet to the ATA, and you are ready to make VoIP calls. Some ATAs may additionally come with software, which you need to install into the host computer for configuration; of course, the installation process is very simple.

(ii) IP Phones: These dedicated phones look no different from regular phones, and also have handsets, trays and buttons. IP phones are directly connected to the router and integrate all the hardware and software necessary to handle IP calls.

(iii) Computer-to-computer: This is of course the easiest way to use VoIP. You don't even have to pay long distance charges. Some companies offer free or inexpensive software that can be used to make VoIP calls between computers. All you need is this software, a microphone, speakers, a sound card and an Internet connection, preferably a fast connection of course (e.g. a connection via cable modem or DSL modem). For computer-to-computer calls, there is no additional charge beyond the standard monthly fee charged by ISPs, no matter how far away the call is.

VoIP  phone calls can be made from anywhere as long as there is a broadband connection. Because IP phones or ATAs transmit information over the Internet, they can be managed by the provider anywhere there is an Internet connection. Therefore, business travelers can carry their VoIP phones with them and can talk to their families anytime. A soft-phone is a client software that loads VoIP services into a desktop or portable computer.
