The Pros and Cons of VoIP

Pros---The advantages of using VoIP

There are many benefits to switching from a traditional phone company's service to a cloud-based VoIP phone system.

1. Lower monthly costs

One of the biggest advantages of VoIP is the lower monthly cost for users to make national and international calls.

Most VoIP phone providers will usually offer unlimited domestic calls for free. International calls are also usually very cheap.

In addition to this, users can save on the repair and maintenance services that they currently pay to their landline provider.

2. Receive calls from anywhere-completely portable

With VoIP, users do not need to be in the office, on site or sitting at a desk phone to receive calls. Users can use an app on their mobile phone, tablet or laptop to take calls from anywhere.

This is a great advantage for teams working remotely or on the go.

3. Advanced business telephony features

VoIP solutions often include a number of additional business telephony features. For example, users can easily set up conference calls using VoIP.

In addition, most VoIP service providers offer virtual receptionists, music on hold, call waiting, IVR, voicemail to email or text and much more. Users can even access advanced telecoms features such as video conferencing.

This can also provide additional cost savings for users, as traditional telephony service providers usually charge recurring fees for these add-ons.

4. Improved scalability and flexibility

Another advantage of VoIP is greater scalability. Whether a user is hiring more staff or opening a new branch in a new city, VoIP makes it easy to grow.

Unlike traditional phone services that require the expense of expensive hardware for dedicated lines, VoIP allows users to add team members with just a few clicks in their account dashboard.

As VoIP is available on all smartphones, users can even reduce the cost of additional equipment and free up desk space by having their team members install the app on their personal phones.

Cons of VoIP - Disadvantages of using VoIP

There are some disadvantages of VoIP that users should be aware of.

1. Users need a good internet connection to make calls

As we explained in the section on how VoIP works, users need to have an internet connection to make calls.

If the user's internet connection is slow, then the quality of the call may suffer.

The good news is that VoIP technology does not use as much bandwidth as one might think. A good connection with less than 70 milliseconds of ping and an upload speed of at least 500 kbps is sufficient for VoIP calls.

However, if the user has a lot of team members in the office, then the user may need to look at the user's bandwidth requirements to see how many concurrent calls the user's company will be making at the same time.

2. Users need to consider power fail

Telephone services can be used normally during a power outage. However, if users do not have power or access to the internet, they will not be able to make VoIP calls.

Typically, most offices have wireless internet supported by WiFi routers. These routers require power, so if the user's building loses power, then the user's internet will also be down, which will affect the user's VoIP service.

The way we mitigate this in our office is to use a battery backup system for our Internet routers. As our internet is provided by a different company to our electricity, we never lose power at the same time.

In addition, because the team members use VoIP applications on their mobile phones, they can always make business calls using mobile data.

3. Users will need to train the user's staff on the new system

Switching to a new phone system means that the user will need to train the staff on how to use it.

Fortunately, most VoIP solution are designed to be as simple and intuitive as possible. This means that it should be easy to train team members on how to use the cloud phone system, even if the user's employees are working remotely.
