What is the difference between a SIP phone and an ordinary telephone?

There are significant differences between SIP phones and ordinary telephones in several aspects, which can be summarized in terms of technical principles, functional characteristics, application scenarios and configuration methods:

  Technical principle:

SIP Phones: Based on the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) protocol, it transmits voice signals over IP networks. It uses a network cable interface (e.g. RJ45) and can be directly connected to a LAN or the Internet for communication.

Ordinary telephone: Based on the traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) system, it communicates through analog telephone lines. It requires the use of a telephone line interface and signal transmission is limited by the line.

  Functional Characteristics:

  SIP Phones:

Supports video calls and can realize visual intercom.

Support cross-region use, not limited by geographic location.

Support multiple voice codecs, such as G.711, G.722, etc., to ensure voice quality.

Can be configured and managed via web interface for user convenience.

Can be seamlessly integrated with existing SIP servers to realize communication with other SIP devices.

Can be accessed to WIFI network and can be used without a network cable.

  Ordinary telephone:

The main function is voice call, does not support video call.

The call distance is limited by the length of the phone line and signal quality.

Configuration and management is relatively simple, but usually needs to be done through a phone service provider.

  Application Scenario:

SIP Phones: suitable for scenarios that require video calls, cross-region communications, and high-definition voice communications, such as enterprises, call centers, and schools.

Ordinary Phones: suitable for general families, small businesses and other simple call demand scenarios.

  Configuration mode:

SIP Phones: Configured by IP address and port number, it can be easily managed and maintained remotely.

Ordinary Phones: Configured by dialing a specific number provided by the service provider or by making simple physical settings.

  Compatibility and scalability:

SIP Phones: Due to the open SIP-based protocol, it has good compatibility and extensibility and can be integrated with a wide range of communication devices and systems.

Ordinary telephones: usually can only be used on the traditional PSTN system, with limited compatibility and scalability.

To summarize, there are significant differences between SIP phones and ordinary telephones in terms of technical principles, functional features, application scenarios and configuration modes, etc. SIP phones communicate through IP networks, support video calls, cross-regional use and high-definition voice communication, and are suitable for scenarios requiring higher communication quality and flexibility.
