What is the difference between an IAD device and a switch?

There are significant differences between IAD devices and switches in terms of functionality, application scenarios and features. The following is a detailed comparison:

  I. Functional difference

  IAD device (Integrated Access Device):

The main function is to complete the end-user voice, data and other services access, as the next generation network (NGN) user access equipment.

It can not only support various voice functions of traditional program-controlled switching terminal equipment, but also support data service functions on packet IP network.

It provides analog subscriber line circuit function, protocol processing function, service support function, data processing function, call processing function, voice QoS management function, voice processing function and maintenance management function.

  Switch:

Mainly used for electric (optical) signal forwarding, providing an exclusive electric signal path for any two network nodes accessing the switch.

It realizes information exchange at the data link layer and can output network resources to multiple computers.

The switch has multiple ports, each of which has a bridging function that can connect a LAN or a high-performance server or workstation.

  II. Application Scenario Difference

  IAD device:

Generally placed on the user side, such as homes, corporate offices, neighborhoods or hallways of commercial buildings.

It is suitable for IP PBX, IMS/NGN, call center, softswitch and other platforms to extend analog intercom.

  Switch:

Widely used in local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) communication.

It is the key equipment to realize network communication and is used to connect various network devices, such as computers, servers, printers and so on.

  III. Difference in Characteristics

  IAD equipment:

Usually has the integrated access capability of voice and data services.

Transmits voice over IP networks through VoIP technology and supports multiple voice coding and transmission methods.

Provides rich service support, such as voice call, fax, multimedia service and billing interface.

  Switch:

Characterized by high cost performance, high flexibility, relative simplicity and ease of implementation.

With the development of the communications industry and the evolution of network technology, the switch market is on a steady rise.

Switch technology allows shared and private LAN segments to be bandwidth-adjusted to alleviate bottlenecks that occur in the flow of information between LANs.

To summarize, there are significant differences between IAD devices and switches in terms of functions, application scenarios, and features.IAD devices are mainly focused on integrated access to voice and data, and are suitable for user-side network access requirements; while switches are mainly used for the forwarding of electrical (optical) signals, providing network nodes with exclusive access to electrical signals, and are widely used in LAN and WAN communications.
