What are the differences between telephone switches and network switches?

Telephone switches and network switches are two types of devices that play a critical role in communication networks.Although they are both used for information transmission and management, their application scenarios and functions are significantly different.

Telephone switches are mainly used in telephone communication, and their core function is to connect telephone lines, allocate and manage telephone lines, and thus achieve interoperability between telephones. This type of device is widely used in institutions, organizations, small and medium-sized enterprises, hotels, schools, and can also be used for residential and secretary telephones.Telephone switches connect and manage telephones through dialing, calling, and other operations, mainly transmitting analog signals, which may be affected by electromagnetic interference during transmission. Its transmission protocols are mainly PSTN(Public Switched Telephone Network)and ISDN(Integrated Digital Services Network),both of which are designed for voice communication. The telephone exchange not only has basic functions such as call connection, holding, and transfer, but also provides advanced functions such as conference calls,IVR voice navigation, call forwarding, and call waiting.

In contrast, network switches are mainly used in computer networks to forward and broadcast data, enabling computers to interconnect and exchange information.Network switches are connected through Ethernet cables, which transmit digital signals and effectively avoid data errors caused by electromagnetic interference and other factors. Its transmission protocols mainly include TCP/IP,HTTP,FTP,etc.These protocols are designed for data communication and Internet applications. The main functions of a network switch include data forwarding and broadcasting,MAC address learning,ARP protocol conversion,VLAN partitioning, etc. It can also achieve QoS(Quality of Service),support flow control and congestion control, and perform traffic monitoring and alarm.Network switches can be divided into wide area network switches and local area network switches according to different application scenarios. The former is mainly used in the telecommunications field, while the latter is used to connect terminal devices such as PCs and network printers.

Technically speaking, there are differences between telephone switches and network switches in terms of signal transmission, routing selection, and other aspects.Telephone exchanges use analog signals, and routing selection is usually based on intelligent guidance or manual operation;Network switches use digital signals and employ automatic routing algorithms.Telephone switches connect through dialing, calling, and other operations, while network switches communicate through forwarding and broadcasting data frames.

In short, although telephone switches and network switches are indispensable devices in communication networks, their respective application scenarios and functions are different.Telephone switches are mainly designed for voice communication, using analog signals to connect through dialing, calling, and other operations;Network switches are mainly designed for data communication, using digital signals to achieve communication through the forwarding and broadcasting of data frames. The choice of switch needs to be comprehensively considered based on specific application scenarios and requirements.
