The T.30 protocol defined traditional fax communication for decades, governing how fax machines negotiated parameters, synchronized transmission, and confirmed page receipt over analog telephone lines. It was designed for a circuit-switched world where a dedicated voice channel provided consistent timing and minimal jitter. When businesses began migrating to VoIP networks, fax machines faced a fundamental problem: packet-based networks introduce delay, jitter, and packet loss that T.30 was never designed to handle. The result was failed transmissions, partial pages, and corrupted images. T.38 was developed specifically to solve these problems, enabling reliable fax transmission over modern IP infrastructure.
T.30 operates by sending analog fax signals as audio tones over a telephone line. The sending and receiving machines exchange tones to negotiate speed, resolution, and page format before transferring image data. This process relies on precise timing; even small delays can cause the receiving machine to misinterpret signals or drop the connection. On IP networks, voice packets may arrive out of order, experience variable delay, or be lost entirely. VoIP codecs that compress audio, such as G.729, further distort the fax tones because they are optimized for human speech, not modem signals. Attempting to run T.30 over a standard VoIP call often results in transmission failures that increase with network congestion and distance.
T.38 solves the T.30 problem by taking fax data out of the audio stream. Instead of transmitting analog tones across the IP network, a T.38 gateway demodulates the fax signal at the edge of the network and converts it into digital image data packets. These packets travel across the IP network using error correction and redundancy, then are remodulated back into analog tones at the far end for the receiving fax machine. Because the IP portion of the journey carries digital data rather than audio, T.38 is immune to the jitter and compression issues that break T.30. It supports real-time fax relay and store-and-forward modes, giving network administrators flexibility in how they deploy Fax over IP.
Most modern VoIP gateways and IP-PBX systems support T.38 natively, making the transition from analog fax to Fax over IP straightforward. Organizations should ensure that both ends of the transmission path support T.38, including their SIP trunk provider, to avoid fallback to T.30 pass-through mode. For businesses that still depend on fax for legal documents, medical records, or signed contracts, T.38 provides a reliable bridge between legacy fax equipment and modern IP networks without requiring entirely new infrastructure.
New Rock Technologies offers VoIP gateways with robust T.38 support, ensuring that businesses can continue sending and receiving faxes reliably after migrating to IP-based voice networks.
T.30 served the business world well in the analog era, but it was not built for packet-switched networks. T.38 replaces the fragile audio-tone approach with a digital fax relay method that tolerates the realities of modern IP communication.
