A VoIP codec encodes voice into digital data for transmission. G.711 offers the best uncompressed quality at ~64–80 kbps, G.729 is bandwidth-friendly at ~8–12 kbps with slight quality trade-off, and Opus is a modern adaptive codec that balances quality and bandwidth (6–40+ kbps) and is ideal for varying networks.
"Codec" stands for coder-decoder. In VoIP it compresses outgoing audio to save bandwidth and decompresses it at the other end. The choice affects call quality, bandwidth use, and CPU load.
| Codec | Bandwidth (per call) | Quality | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| G.711 | ~64–80 kbps | Very high (uncompressed) | LAN, high-quality internal calls |
| G.729 | ~8–12 kbps | Good | Bandwidth-limited WAN/links |
| Opus | ~6–40+ kbps (adaptive) | High, adaptive | Variable networks, WebRTC, mobile |
Opus at its lowest settings and G.729 are the most bandwidth-efficient; Opus is also adaptive.
Codec matters, but network conditions (jitter, loss, latency) usually affect perceived quality more.
For variable networks, yes; on a clean LAN, G.711's uncompressed audio is marginally cleaner.
The right VoIP codec balances quality and bandwidth for your network. G.711 suits capable LANs, G.729 conserves links, and Opus excels on unpredictable paths. Newrock IP PBX and gateway systems support these codecs, letting you tune voice quality to your environment.
