An Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) lets you keep your existing analog phones and fax machines while moving your phone service to VoIP—it translates old RJ-11 ports into IP signals. This guide explains how it works and when you actually need one.
Definition: An ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) is a small device with one or more FXS ports that converts analog telephone signals into VoIP/SIP so legacy handsets can register with an IP-PBX or SIP provider.
The ATA takes the analog waveform from a phone, digitizes and encodes it (typically G.711/G.729), wraps it in RTP over IP, and signals call setup with SIP. On the far end the process reverses. From the phone's perspective, nothing changed; from the network, it is just another SIP endpoint.
| ATA | FXS Gateway | |
|---|---|---|
| Ports | 1–4 usually | 4–48+, modular |
| Management | Basic web UI | Centralized (UMS), bulk provisioning |
| Best for | Home / very small office | Multi-phone sites, branches |
| Reliability | Consumer grade | Carrier/enterprise grade |
For more than a few phones, a Newrock FXS gateway or an OM-series IP-PBX with built-in FXS ports scales better and is centrally managed via UMS—the same job as an ATA, enterprise-grade.
Yes, via T.38 fax-over-IP on an ATA or FXS gateway that supports it.
Most are powered by USB or adapter; choose models with failover if voice must survive power cuts.
Consumer ATAs are 1–2 ports; for more, use an FXS gateway (8/16/24/32 ports).
Use SIP TLS/SRTP and strong credentials; for many devices, centralized management reduces risk.
An ATA is the cheapest bridge from analog to VoIP for a handful of devices. Beyond that, an FXS gateway or IP-PBX with analog ports is the more manageable choice.
