Direct Inward Dialing (DID) gives every employee or department their own external phone number without a physical line for each—calls route straight to the right extension over your VoIP system.
Definition: DID (Direct Inward Dialing) is a telephony service where a range of external numbers is delivered over a trunk and mapped to internal extensions, so outside callers reach individuals directly.
Your carrier delivers a block of numbers over a SIP trunk. The IP-PBX maps each DID to an extension, ring group, or IVR. An inbound call to a specific DID is routed internally—no receptionist required to forward it.
| Main line + auto-attendant | DID | |
|---|---|---|
| Caller path | Dial main, navigate menu | Dial person directly |
| Cost | Fewer numbers | Per-number, still cheap via SIP |
| Professional feel | Good | Better (direct reach) |
| Tracking | Per campaign harder | Per-number analytics |
An OM-series IP-PBX with SIP trunks handles DID mapping, routing, and failover natively; combine with UMS to manage DIDs consistently across branches.
Over SIP they are inexpensive—often a small monthly fee per number versus legacy PRI channels.
Yes; SIP providers offer geographic DIDs so you appear local anywhere.
No—they are a trunk feature configured in the IP-PBX.
Route to voicemail, a colleague, or a queue via the PBX's call handling rules.
DID turns one trunk into many direct lines, improving caller experience and analytics. It is a standard, low-cost feature of any SIP-based IP-PBX.
